About The Basics of Greater Elgin

The Basics of Greater Elgin is an initiative of Enriching Partnerships for Early Learning (EPEL) in collaboration with School District U-46 and many dedicated community partners. Rooted in five science-based parenting and caregiving principles, The Basics provides simple yet powerful ways to support young children’s development in everyday life. Locally, this initiative is coordinated and implemented by EPEL, community partners, and early childhood champions dedicated to helping every child thrive. The Basics of Greater Elgin is part of a broader national movement committed to ensuring all children enter school ready for success in school and life.

Our Strategy

Socio-ecological Saturation

EPEL and early childhood champions collaborate across sectors to embed The Basics Principles throughout the community. By equipping a diverse network of organizations—healthcare providers, schools, libraries, businesses, faith-based groups, and social services—we ensure that parents and caregivers consistently receive information and support through multiple, trusted touchpoints. This broad, collective approach creates a community-wide culture that reinforces The Basics in everyday family interactions, helping all young children thrive.

Many hands make light work.
